A medical practitioner is a Medical Doctor who is registered with the relevant body, and as such is licenced to practice medicine. In the United Kingdom for example, the General Medical Council (GMC) is legally obliged to maintain a Principal List of Registered Medical Practitioners. Those with an appropriate medical degree may be admitted to the list, and as such are then able to legally practice medicine. A medical practitioner is a someone who proficiently engages in medicine or related medical arts as a profession, career, or more rarely, as an avocation. It includes those engaging in medical specialties, Physicians, General Practitioners and all other grades of doctor such as interns and foundation house officer. Surgeons are also classed as medical practitioners as they are included in the Principal List of Registered Medical Practitioners. Physician Assistants (PA-C) and Nurse Practitioners (NP-C) are also medical practitioners.
